The Effect of Using Songs on Young Iranian EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Learning: A Case of Gender | ||

Abstract Knowledge can be reflected in vocabulary repertoire; it is thus important to find out effective methods of vocabulary teaching which can assist language learners in the process of vocabulary learning. This study investigated the effectiveness of teaching English vocabulary through song and non-song methods to elementary Iranian EFL learners. Additionally, it examined the role of EFL learners’ gender in their success in English vocabulary learning. To these ends, 100 EFL learners, aged 9-12, were selected and were randomly assigned into two experimental (song) and two control (non-song) groups, each with 25 male and 25 female EFL participants. The experimental and control groups had song and non-song instructions, respectively, for English vocabulary learning. To collect data, a 40-item vocabulary test was developed and administered as the pretest and posttest. Results from analysis of covariance revealed that both song and non-song instructions had a statistically significant and positive effect on the EFL learners’ vocabulary learning. Furthermore, the female learners benefited more from the song method whereas the males benefited more from the non-song method of instruction. The findings imply that using songs should not be taken a panacea for both male and female EFL learners; rather, it should serve as a supplementary method to teaching vocabulary, particularly to young female learners in EFL classrooms. | ||

دانش و آگاهی یک فرد در دایرهی واژگان او نمایانگر میشود؛ بنابراین یافتن شیوههای موثر در آموزش واژگان که بتواند به زبانآموزان در فرآیند یادگیری واژگان کمک نماید، حائز اهمیت میباشد. این تحقیق تاثیر استفاده از دو روش شعر و غیر شعر را در آموزش واژگان انگلیسی به زبانآموزان ایرانی (در سطح مقدماتی) بررسی مینماید. همچنین، تاثیر جنسیت زبانآموزان را در موفقیت یادگیری واژگان انگلیسی مورد کنکاش قرار میدهد. در این تحقیق، 100 نفر زبانآموز در محدودهی سنی 9 تا 12 سال انتخاب و به دو گروه تجربی شعر (با 25 شرکت کنندهی پسر و 25 شرکت کنندهی دختر) و دو گروه شاهد غیرشعر (با 25 شرکت کنندهی پسر و 25 شرکت کنندهی دختر) به طور تصادفی تقسیم گردید. در گروه تجربی و شاهد، از روش شعر و غیر شعر برای یادگیری واژگان استفاده شد. برای جمع آوری دادهها، یک آزمون واژگان با 40 سئوال به عنوان پیشآزمون و پس-آزمون استفاده گردید. تحلیل کوواریانس نشان داد که هر دو روش شعر و غیرشعر تاثیر مثبتی و معنیدار به لحاظ آماری در یادگیری واژگان انگلیسی زبانآموزان داشته است. همچنین، زبانآموزان دختر بیشتر از روش شعر و زبان آموزان پسر بیشتر از روشهای غیرشعر بهره بردهاند. نتایج حاکی از آن است که استفاده از شعر نباید به عنوان تنها راه حل و جایگزین برای تمام دیگر روشهای آموزش واژگان هم برای زبان آموزان دختر و هم برای زبان آموزان پسر تلقی گردد. بلکه باید بعنوان روش مکمل برای تدریس واژگان، بخصوص برای زبان آموزان دختر کم سن در کلاس های زبان انگلیسی بکار برده شود. | ||
